A good freestall design is essential for maximizing the stall bed. The freestall should be placed so there is plenty of forward lunge space, a wide open space between the rails and enough room at the alley side to allow the cow to easy movement up and down. There should be adequate space between the loops to allow her to law comfortably, and the freestall should be long enough so that the cow cannot walk along the back of the platform.
Three different types of stalls:
- Single Bend Stalls - offer an open front allowing the cow easier access for her head and shoulders.
- Double Bend/Bullet Stalls - help allow for easy chin clearance when exiting out of the stall.
- Cantilever/Triple Bend Stalls - help in preventing hip bone injuries while getting up and down.
